Ascent is one of Valorant's most enduring and strategically balanced maps. Featuring open bomb sites and a highly contested Mid courtyard, Ascent is defined by control of its central area. Whoever controls Mid controls access to both A-Link and B-Market, splitting the defensive lines and dictating the pace of the round.
Offensive Strategy: Executing the Mid Default
On offense, running directly into the choke points of A-Main or B-Main is a recipe for disaster, as defenders can lock them down easily with utility. Instead, attackers should execute a 'default' setup that spreads players across the map to gather information and contest Mid. Placing one player in B-Main, two in Mid (contesting Top-Mid and Catwalk), and two towards A-Main creates pressure globally. A standard Mid default aims to force out defender smokes, allowing attackers to exploit gaps later in the round.
Defensive Anchoring: Securing the Retake Doors
Ascent is unique in that both bomb sites feature closeable mechanical doors. On defense, sentinels (such as Killjoy or Cypher) should anchor B-site, utilizing utilities like nanoswarms and tripwires to delay entries. A-site is often held more dynamically from A-Heaven and Garden. Once attackers push onto a site, defenders should close the doors immediately to isolate the entry team, blocking off the supporting players in Main and making retakes significantly easier.
The Importance of Wall-Bangable Spots
Many walls on Ascent are extremely thin (paper-thin bullet penetration). Specifically, the wall in B-Main, the A-Garden wall, and the A-Link panels can be easily penetrated by high-penetration weapons like the Odin, Ares, or Sheriff. Utilizing info-gathering utility (such as Sova's recon bolt or Fade's haunt) paired with an Odin in these spots is a highly effective, staple competitive strategy on Ascent.
